On Thursday, May 30, 2024, Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve volunteers hosted a visit from Englewood’s Scout Troop 26B. Seven scouts, accompanied by Scout Master Randy Cantrell and two able assistants, were there to work on conservation and community service requirements for their individual ranks in the scouts.
Their group project for the day was to gather pine needles and palm stalks from throughout the Preserve and redistribute it over the labyrinth and outdoor classroom areas located atop the hill west of the parking lot. They divided into two teams, worked together and completed resurfacing efforts for both locations. Throughout the 3-hour visit, the scouts also practiced their map reading, orienteering and problem-solving skills as they searched for more resources to complete their projects.
This is the second year since the Preserve restoration that Scout Troop 26B has volunteered with community service projects. The Preserve is also the site of three Eagle Scout projects done in previous years. Two are marked by plaques, one at the main entrance kiosk and the second at the bird viewing area near Hosman Pond. The third project, completed last year, is a floating turtle observation platform, also at Hosman Pond.
Thank you Troop 26B for your continuing support of Lemon Bay Conservancy and our conservation initiatives!
