DESCRIPTION:LEMON BAYWATCH\nUF/IFAS Extension SEA GRANT Program Eyes On Seagrass \nInvites You To\nBecome a citizen Scientist for a Day! \n9:00 – 11:00 a.m.\nSaturday\, April 13\, 2024\nCedar Point Environmental Center\n2300 Placida Rd.\, Englewood\, FL 34224 \n  \nSea grass is essential for a healthy marine environment.  It is the food source and habitat for many species of fish\, shellfish and marine animals; it enhances water clarity\, stabilizes shorelines and helps to sequester carbon and nitrogen. \nIn recent years\, there has been a significant die-off of seagrass in Charlotte Harbor and certain areas of Lemon Bay. This is primarily due to rapid algae growth that robs seagrass of adequate sunlight necessary for healthy growth. The health and habitat of hundreds of species has suffered as a result. \nEyes on Seagrass is a citizen science program developed by UF/IF Sea Grant that trains volunteers to monitor seagrass using carefully developed scientific protocols. SUMMARY:Lemon Bay Conservancy Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars to join us on Thursday\, January 25th\, as we hold our Annual Meeting and kickoff the 2024 Lemon Bay Coastal Seminar Series with a presentation by  Tonya Wiley\,  from Havenworth Coastal Conservation\, on “The Endangered Sawfish of Florida: Past\, Present\, and Future”. \nThe evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. with refreshments and opportunities to talk with volunteers from LBC about Vertical Oyster Gardens and our many other environmental initiatives.  Students from the Lemon Bay High School marine science conservation club will also be on hand\, talking about their programs and scheduling sign-ups for special tour dates to visit the LBHS Marine Science Lab. \nThe business meeting will start at 5:30 p.m.\, to be followed by our guest speaker and by the auction of the LBC Traveling Heron!  (Please see the separate article later in this email with more details about how you can bid to “host the heron”\, even if you can’t make the meeting.) \nThe meeting will be held at the Cape Haze Community Center located at 180 Spyglass Alley\, Placida\, FL 33946\, at the intersection of Spyglass Alley and Spaniards Road.  Parking is available on both streets.  To reach the Community Center from Placida Road (Hwy. 775)\, turn west onto Cape Haze Drive.  At the traffic circle\, take the first right (heading north) onto Spaniards Rd.  The Community Center will be just ahead on your left. \nCoastal Seminar Series additional planning note:  LBC member Rob Robbins\, a marine biologist\, has scheduled three additional outstanding speakers on interesting and important topics related to our beautiful\, but fragile\, local ecosystems. DESCRIPTION:The Florida Sea Grant program “Eyes on Seagrass” is gearing up for the summer seagrass monitoring period. Volunteers are needed for the important task of observing and documenting seagrass conditions in Charlotte County waters and Lemon Bay. \nVolunteers and volunteer boat captains are encouraged to attend the seagrass monitoring training program on June 24\, 2023\, at the Centennial Park Recreation Center\, 1120 Centennial Blvd.\, Port Charlotte\, FL 33953. If you have participated in previous seagrass monitoring activities\, you do not need to attend the training session.
