DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bill Dunson from the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and Lemon Bay Conservancy for a nature walk at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve (3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd.\, Englewood).  The topic of the day will be “Restoration Ecology.”  The Preserve is a wonderful place to consider how best to restore an old golf course to natural habitats.  Much of the 80 acres was completely cleared and a variety of habitat based plant communities replanted.  Various decisions had to be made in choosing the plants and in managing their growth and establishment.  A major problem was posed by the natural and very powerful process of Succession. Various possible solutions will be considered and debated.  This event is free\, and all are welcome to participate. For more information\, contact mangrovechapter@fnps.org. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bill Dunson for a nature walk at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve (3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd.\, Englewood). The primary topic will be a discussion and contrast of native and non-native plants and why they are considered important to habitat restoration.  This is not actually a simple question to answer for at least two reasons- 1.  Defining native vs non-native is not a black and white matter\, and 2.  Assuming you recognize the advantages of using some “FL friendly” non-natives as sources of flowers\, fruit and foliage\, what criteria are acceptable to use some non-natives in our landscapes? For example if you want monarchs to breed\, what milkweeds should you plant?  We welcome all points of view and will attempt to broaden your knowledge of the subject.  This event is free\, and all are welcome to participate .When visiting the Preserve\, closed-toe walking shoes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and bug spray are suggested.  A water bottle\, camera\, and binoculars are also encouraged.

SUMMARY:New Year's Day Nature Walk and Picnic Lunch at Middle Beach/Blind Pass
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bill Dunson will lead a nature walk on Thursday\, Jan. 1\, 2026\, from 10-11 am at Middle Beach/Blind Pass Beach Park on Manasota Key; (6725 Manasota Key Rd\, Englewood\, FL 34223).  Come make a great start to the New Year\, burn off a few calories\, and learn and share some nature lore.  The entire walk is less than a mile\, on narrow trails and the beach. \nWe will meet at 10 am in the parking area near where the old Duisberg Trail starts (https://floridahikes.com/lemon-bay-conservancy-duisberg-nature-trail).  Turn east into the main parking area and take the first left.  Note that Middle Beach is currently only accessible from the southern end of Manasota Key as the road to the north of that point has not been repaired since Hurricanes Helene and Milton. \nThe park was heavily damaged by the storm\, but we will explore remaining areas of mangroves\, upland subtropical hammocks\, dune habitat\, and the mangrove boardwalk.  The main bayside area of the park was dredge spoil from the construction of the ICW in the late 1960’s. \nYou are required to sign a liability waiver.  No dogs or smoking/vaping allowed.  No reservations are required for the walk. \nFollowing the walk\, there will be a cook-out and pot-luck at Bill’s home.  There is a limit of 40 people for lunch and reservations are required.  Send your name and number of attendees to Bill at wdunson@comcast.net.  Bill will provide additional details to confirmed participants. \nFor further information contact Bill Dunson (wdunson@comcast.net)  (NOTE:  LUNCH RESRVATIONS ARE NOW AT CAPACITY.) \n

SUMMARY:Exploration Day - Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 14\, 2026\, Lemon Bay Conservancy will host its annual “Exploration Day” Nature Festival at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve.  This year\, we’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day and the 5th anniversary of our reopening of the restored preserve.  The free event begins with an “Early Bird” guided bird at 8:00 am.  Guided nature walks on various topics will continue throughout the morning.   Local environmental groups will provide information exhibits and offer hands-on exhibits.  Everyone is invited to attend this free\, community-wide event. \nLemon Creek Wildflower Preserve is an 80-acre former golf course with numerous freshwater ponds and the Lemon Creek estuary.  It was purchased by Lemon Bay Conservancy in 2010 with the goal of providing a refuge for wildlife and opportunities for environmental education and scientific research.  The preserve has been restored to native habitats in partnership with the Southwest Water Management District and NOAA. \nLemon Bay Conservancy is a non-profit organization managed by volunteers and funded by donations\, memberships and grants. \n\nThe Preserve is located at 3120 Gasparilla Pines Boulevard\, Englewood\, FL 34224. \nClick here to see a post with additional event details: Exploration Day 2026

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve
DESCRIPTION:A 1-hour guided walk along mowed trails through diverse upland habitats and freshwater ponds that connect to brackish Lemon Creek.  Visitors can observe native and Florida-friendly plants\, vibrant wildflowers\, and butterflies in dedicated habitats\, while spotting upland and wading birds\, insects\, reptiles and other wildlife.  We discuss ongoing research such as the juvenile Tarpon “net pull”.  Highlights often include panoramic views from the Labyrinth on the Hill and insights into ongoing habitat restoration efforts\, providing an engaging overview of LBC’s Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve.
