SUMMARY:Saltwater Ecology
DESCRIPTION:One of the major reasons Lemon Creek WIldflower Preserve is so interesting is the juxtaposition of freshwater\, estuarine/marine and upland habitats.   Join walk leader Dr. Bill Dunson as we focus on learning about some of the plants and animals that live in the tidal environments including the famous juvenile tarpon and halophytic plants.  In addition to being able to tolerate high salts\, estuarine organisms must tolerate very low oxygen levels and desiccation.  The increasing rate of sea level rise will be considered in predicting what the preserve will look like in 50-100 years. \nThe preserve address is 3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd\, Englewood 34224. \n\nWhen visiting the Preserve\, closed-toe walking shoes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and bug spray are suggested.  A water bottle\, camera\, and binoculars are also encouraged.

SUMMARY:What are native plants and why are they important to habitat restoration?
DESCRIPTION:It is surprisingly difficult to come up with a concise definition of native plants and this affects how plants are chosen for use in revegetating LCWP.  Primarily only native plants are being placed in Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve\, but some non-natives have been retained and we will discuss/debate the reasons for this.  The problems posed by weedy non-natives in early successional habitats will be discussed and the methods considered that can be used to minimize herbicide use.  The issues are difficult and decisions are not as black and white as you might think.  This walk will be led by Dr. Bill Dunson and is co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.

Co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.

SUMMARY:Plant succession & shade tolerance and how they affect habitat restoration
DESCRIPTION:Lemon Bay Conservancy has embarked on a very ambitious project to restore an old golf course.  The changes to date in the original vegetation which was present at the time of purchase have been astounding. Dr. BIll Dunson\, walk leader\, will lead a discussion of the reasons that some plantings have succeeded and others have not.  The natural process of plant succession has a huge effect on restoration as does the degree of shade tolerance of each species.  We will learn some “scientific horticulture” and assess/debate the design of the plantings.  Co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.
