SUMMARY:Lemon BayWatch Oyster Ambassadors
DESCRIPTION:The Lemon BayWatch Team of Lemon Bay Conservancy is pursuing their goal of improving the water quality of Lemon Bay through the use of vertical oyster gardens. \n  \nThe Lemon BayWatch “Oyster Ambassadors” will be on site at WATERWAYS Paddlesports\, 501 W. Dearborn Street\, Englewood\, FL 34223 every Thursday\, beginning January 18\, 2024  through April\, 25\, 2024\, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to provide oyster information\, answer questions\, and provide free oyster strands to residents who have registered through our site. \nVertical oyster gardens\, also known as VOGs\, are strings of recycled oyster shells collected from local Englewood restaurants.  When suspended in tidal waters\, VOGs provide the ideal habitat for young larval oysters to grow into adult oysters capable of filtering up to 50 gallons of water per day. \nThe vertical oyster garden movement has spread throughout Southwest Florida and has had a positive ecological impact.  Studies have shown that not only do they contribute to water filtration and promote cleaner water for healthy sea grass; they provide habitat for a variety of marine animals and fish. The Lemon BayWatch team is proud to be a part of this water quality initiative that will help to protect and restore the waters of Lemon Bay. \nIf you would like to be part of this important effort to improve the quality of water around your home\, register today by  clicking on this link: LBC Oyster Garden Installation Request

SUMMARY:Eyes on Seagrass
DESCRIPTION:LEMON BAYWATCH\nUF/IFAS Extension SEA GRANT Program Eyes On Seagrass \nInvites You To\nBecome a citizen Scientist for a Day! \n9:00 – 11:00 a.m.\nSaturday\, April 13\, 2024\nCedar Point Environmental Center\n2300 Placida Rd.\, Englewood\, FL 34224 \n  \nSea grass is essential for a healthy marine environment.  It is the food source and habitat for many species of fish\, shellfish and marine animals; it enhances water clarity\, stabilizes shorelines and helps to sequester carbon and nitrogen. \nIn recent years\, there has been a significant die-off of seagrass in Charlotte Harbor and certain areas of Lemon Bay. This is primarily due to rapid algae growth that robs seagrass of adequate sunlight necessary for healthy growth. The health and habitat of hundreds of species has suffered as a result. \nEyes on Seagrass is a citizen science program developed by UF/IF Sea Grant that trains volunteers to monitor seagrass using carefully developed scientific protocols. Citizen scientists collect data on seagrass health\, sediment\, algae presence\, and water quality at numerous sites in Lemon Bay and Charlotte Harbor.  The data collected by citizen volunteers provides important information for scientists to better manage water resources and guide conservation management policy. \nThe Lemon BayWatch team invites you to a live demonstration of seagrass monitoring on  Saturday\, April 13th at Cedar Point Environmental Center.  Come see what citizen scientists can do to make an important difference in our environment! \nJOIN US!  Advance registration is required.  Register by clicking on this link:https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0uLUpAoLPbH0h26 \nTo learn more about the Eyes on Sea Grass program\, including upcoming sampling dates\, follow-on this link: \nhttps://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/charlotte/sea-grant/eyes-on-seagrass/
