SUMMARY:Guided Tour On Successional Changes and Salinity At Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this informative guided tour on “Succession” at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve on Thursday January 18\, 2024 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Succession  is a ‘nonseasonal’ directional change and continuous pattern of colonization and extinction at a  particular site by populations. Together we will explore the local replacement of populations in a regular sequence following the opening of a space that was created through the disturbance caused during the conservation efforts at Wildflower Preserve. We will examine this basic question of interest; Are patterns of replacement predictable and what is the underlying factors that accounts for these changes? \nDr. Bill Dunson will guide us through the successional process as we view the response of the Preserve to disturbances that open areas for invasion\, or reoccupation of certain plants and organisms. Please be sure to wear appropriate footwear\, sunscreen\, bug repellent\, and a hat. \n

SUMMARY:Rock Gardening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us for our ongoing rock painting series. This workshop will be held at the Sanctuary at Cape Haze Condominiums Clubhouse\, located at 6610 Gasparilla Pines Boulevard\, Englewood\, Fl throughout the summer months. We will provide paint\, brushes\, some cocktail napkins\, mod podge for decoupage\, and a couple different types of acrylic pens for group use. Of course\, you are welcome to and may want to bring your personal supplies as well. Participants are encouraged to bring rocks or shells to decorate. River rocks are ideal\, because they take paint well and are easier to draw on. Parchment paper is also good to work on \, so be sure to bring a sheet or two along with you if you wish. We will have paper towels\, garbage bags\, and a few coloring books to use as examples for drawing. Decoupage takes a bit of time to dry\, so our workshop instructor Bonnie Stuhlmiller will take these items home to coat with spray. Participants will need to make arrangements for pick up or for donation of their finished rocks to be used at the Labyrinth on the Hill rock garden. Everyone is welcome to participate and bring along creative ideas and scissors if you have them.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice at Sunset Labyrinth Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come and walk the Labyrinth on the Hill with Tonya Bramlage and Lary Stuhlmiller as we celebrate the summer solstice on Wednesday June 21\, 2023. The word “solstice” comes from the Latin solstitium—from sol (Sun) and stitium (still or stopped). Due to Earth’s tilted axis\, the Sun doesn’t rise and set at the same locations on the horizon each morning and evening; its rise and set positions move northward or southward in the sky as Earth travels around the Sun through the year. Also\, the Sun’s track in the sky becomes higher or lower throughout the year. The June solstice is significant because the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky at this time\, at which point the Sun’s path does not change for a brief period of time. After the solstice\, the Sun appears to reverse course and head back in the opposite direction symbolic of the same pattern used when we walk the Labyrinth.
