SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk- Dr. Bill Dunson\, Native vs Non-Native
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bill Dunson for a nature walk at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve (3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd.\, Englewood). The primary topic will be a discussion and contrast of native and non-native plants and why they are considered important to habitat restoration.  This is not actually a simple question to answer for at least two reasons- 1.  Defining native vs non-native is not a black and white matter\, and 2.  Assuming you recognize the advantages of using some “FL friendly” non-natives as sources of flowers\, fruit and foliage\, what criteria are acceptable to use some non-natives in our landscapes? For example if you want monarchs to breed\, what milkweeds should you plant?  We welcome all points of view and will attempt to broaden your knowledge of the subject.  This event is free\, and all are welcome to participate .When visiting the Preserve\, closed-toe walking shoes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and bug spray are suggested.  A water bottle\, camera\, and binoculars are also encouraged.

SUMMARY:Juvenile Tarpon Research Net Pull
DESCRIPTION:Attention all new and returning Tarpon net pull volunteers\, are invited to participate in our  Tarpon pull event.  We will first need to load the seine net and other equipment in the Jon boat before using our UTV to tow the boat over to the ponds located by Fiddlers Green. Please use the Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve parking lot and plan to meet at the equipment shed at 7:45 am. After we have finished loading up\, you can then drive your vehicle over to Fiddlers Green and use the carpark there for your convenience. The actual net pull will get underway around 8:30 am starting with the smaller of the two ponds. If you have waders please bring them along with gloves\, a hat\, water and mosquito repellant. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Bill Dunson from the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and Lemon Bay Conservancy for a nature walk at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve (3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd.\, Englewood).  The topic of the day will be “Restoration Ecology.”  The Preserve is a wonderful place to consider how best to restore an old golf course to natural habitats.  Much of the 80 acres was completely cleared and a variety of habitat based plant communities replanted.  Various decisions had to be made in choosing the plants and in managing their growth and establishment.  A major problem was posed by the natural and very powerful process of Succession. SUMMARY:Juvenile Tarpon Research Net Pull
DESCRIPTION:Attention all new and returning Tarpon net pull volunteers\, are invited to participate in our  Tarpon pull event.  We will first need to load the seine net and other equipment in the Jon boat before using our UTV to tow the boat over to the ponds located by Fiddlers Green. Please use the Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve parking lot and plan to meet at the equipment shed at 7:45 am. After we have finished loading up\, you can then drive your vehicle over to Fiddlers Green and use the carpark there for your convenience. The actual net pull will get underway around 8:30 am starting with the smaller of the two ponds. If you have waders please bring them along with gloves\, a hat\, water and mosquito repellant. Please contact Malcolm Collingwood at 917-915-1076 or malcolmcollingwood@gmail.com to RSVP for the event. This event is open to everyone in the local community that is interested in participating.
