On April 22nd, Lemon BayWatch Committee members Jane Collingwood and Sue Wills presented oyster gardening to attendees at the Earth Day celebration at Cedar Point Environmental Center. Participants were invited to string oyster shells on marine wire to create vertical oyster gardens that can be attached to docks along the waterfront to help grow new oysters.
As they worked, they learned about the life cycle of oysters and the oysters’ ability to filter impurities from the water. They left with their own vertical oyster gardens and, hopefully, a better understanding of the importance of maintaining healthy marine habitats.
