Come and enjoy a New Year’s Day nature walk in a well preserved sub-tropical hammock along the Duisberg Trail (named in honor of a former LBC president). Examine the detailed structure of a mangrove forest, consider the history of this former ocean inlet which received dredge spoil from the ICW in the late 1960’s, and wonder at the ephemeral beauty of the beach. This is a short walk that encompasses a wide variety of habitats and will provide a view of what the future holds for coastal land during a time of rapidly rising sea level. Surprisingly the barrier islands will likely persist into the future, but will move landward. This walk will be led by Dr. Bill Dunson and is co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. The parking lot is located at 6725 Manasota Key Rd. Turn east into the parking lot, then left to entrance of trail.
Closed-toe walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray are suggested. A water bottle, camera, and binoculars are also encouraged.
