Lemon Bay Conservancy has embarked on a very ambitious project to restore an old golf course. The changes to date in the original vegetation which was present at the time of purchase have been astounding. Dr. BIll Dunson, walk leader, will lead a discussion of the reasons that some plantings have succeeded and others have not. The natural process of plant succession has a huge effect on restoration as does the degree of shade tolerance of each species. We will learn some “scientific horticulture” and assess/debate the design of the plantings. Co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.
The preserve address is 3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd, Englewood 34224.
When visiting the Preserve, closed-toe walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray are suggested. A water bottle, camera, and binoculars are also encouraged.
