It is surprisingly difficult to come up with a concise definition of native plants and this affects how plants are chosen for use in revegetating LCWP. Primarily only native plants are being placed in Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve, but some non-natives have been retained and we will discuss/debate the reasons for this. The problems posed by weedy non-natives in early successional habitats will be discussed and the methods considered that can be used to minimize herbicide use. The issues are difficult and decisions are not as black and white as you might think. This walk will be led by Dr. Bill Dunson and is co-sponsored by Lemon Bay Conservancy and the Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.
The preserve address is 3120 Gasparilla Pines Blvd, Englewood 34224.
When visiting the Preserve, closed-toe walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray are suggested. A water bottle, camera, and binoculars are also encouraged.
