Lemon Baywatch notes: 11/15
Committee members Jane Collingwood, Sue Wills and Hilary Dahms met with members of the Suncoast Waterkeeper and Sarasota Bay Watch on Monday, November 13 at the LBC office on Manor Road, Englewood to survey the area and take water samples to assess the damage from Hurricane Ian to local creeks flowing into Lemon Bay.
Suncoast Waterkeeper is spearheading a cleanup campaign for the creeks and canals of the Lemon Bay watershed to remove debris from the waterways. These areas are generally accessible only by small boats and are now filled with large amounts of vegetative and solid debris from damaged homes that is fouling the waters and pose a hazard to navigation.
Suncoast Waterkeeper is working with Sarasota Bay Watch, Suncoast Aqua Ventures and CHNEP to organize volunteer groups to remove debris from the water. Kayakers and small boat owners will be needed as well as volunteers to do landside cleanup. A first Waterways Cleanup Day will be held on Sunday, December 11. Volunteers are asked to meet at 9:00 a.m. at Holiday Estates, 1245 Kingfisher Drive, Englewood, 34223
