We welcome Michelle VanderHaar as LBC’s new Executive Director! In her new position, Michelle will be responsible for working with the Board of Directors to develop a strategic plan for the organization, expanding outreach to our community to increase engagement with LBC’s programs, and guiding day-to-day operations.
Michelle recently retired as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For more than 20 years, she has worked as a Private Lands Biologist, helping landowners, communities, and partners restore and protect wetlands, grasslands, streams, and coastal habitats that support wildlife, clean water, and healthy ecosystems.
Her work has centered on collaboration — bringing together private landowners, conservation groups, schools, Tribes, and local, state, and federal agencies to turn conservation ideas into on-the-ground results. She has provided technical and habitat restoration assistance, navigated environmental permitting and compliance, and supported projects benefiting migratory birds, threatened and endangered species, and fisheries. Over her career, she has helped secure several million dollars in grants and partner contributions to support conservation and community projects.
In addition to her field and partnership work, Michelle has served in several leadership roles with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and volunteer groups. She enjoys mentoring staff, supporting community-led conservation, and finding practical, inclusive ways to connect people with nature. Her work reflects a long-term commitment to caring for natural landscapes while building strong, trusted relationships with the people who live and work there.
Michelle has two boys, one is a Ski-Patroller in Vermont and one is playing college baseball in Michigan. She lives with her partner, Jason, and their two dogs, Harley and Ginger. She and Jason enjoy all things outdoors, especially the beautiful Florida beaches and taking long trips on the motorcycle.
Michelle will be based out of the LBC office, at 460 W Dearborn in Englewood. You can reach her t Michelle@lemonbayconservancy.org or 941-830-8922.
Please reach out and welcome Michelle onboard!
