Our Annual Open House at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve was held on February 24th. LBC hosted close to 200 visitors at this year’s event, which included walks, talks, and displays by local environmental groups. Attendees stopped by to enjoy learning about our environment and enjoying the beauty of the preserve on a beautiful February morning..

More than 60 people joined us on February 22nd for the Coastal Seminar Series program on Manta Rays. Attendees heard fascinating facts about Manta Rays and research projects underway to better understand and protect them.

Q: How do you plant 400 trees in under 45 minutes?
A: With lots of preparation and 200 volunteers!

Thanks to the generosity of the OldCastle company, 200 of their employees, who were visiting our area for a convention in Port Charlotte, came by bus to Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve on the afternoon of February 13th for a Community Outreach event.

In addition to bringing volunteers, OldCastle donated funds for site preparation at the planting locations, the 400 trees that were planted, and the shovels, rakes and other supplies used for the planting project.

Our LBC volunteer leaders made the warp-speed event successful with detailed preparations and guidance to the OldCastle volunteers. Each of the 400 tree planting locations was marked with flagging. Different colored flags were used to designate locations for the four species planted: Slash Pine, Live Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, and Dahoon Holly.
